The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do in becoming a gemstone collector the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the purest spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Muted gemstone colors or are too dark can lower the value.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase. How precise the cut is is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and its final value.

A third consideration is the gemstone's clarity. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the absence of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

The next factors to consider our weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and work with the wide variety of gemstones available today. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones become higher in value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They become less valuable when they are lighter or darker than the pure spectral color.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but along with your gemstones. A good cut showcases the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way to determine the precision of its cut is to check how well it reflects light on a consistent basis throughout the surface of the stone. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.

The clarity of a gemstone is our next factor. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. The gemstone without flaws is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Many hobbyists will use a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

Next on the agenda is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Hematite, Topaz or Turquoise for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite.

Hints About loose accent diamonds

"Indeed there is no stone, the colour of which is more delightful to the eye;
for whereas the sight fixes itself with avidity upon the green grass and the
foliage of the trees, we have all the more pleasure in looking upon the
smaragdus, there being no green in existence of a more intense colour than this.
And then, besides, of all the precious stones, this is the only one that feeds
the sight without satiating it. Even when the vision has been fatigued with
intently viewing other objects, it is refreshed by being turned upon this stone;
and lapidaries know of nothing that is more gratefully soothing to the eyes, its
soft green tints being wonderfully adapted for assuaging lassitude, when felt in
those organs" The Natural History, Book XXXVII. The Natural History of Precious
Stones, Chapter 16. Pliny the Elder (23-79)

say that if the blue color of the stone appears to be uneven then it is probably
a dyed stone and not a valid opal.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is a term referring to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology as a passionate hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit various locations close by to look for rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

The first step in beginning this hobby the wise way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they've even become associated with particular ones. Everyone knows ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, aquamarine, turquoise, and jade green Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure natural color.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut will highlight the pure color of the stone, diminish any inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way to determine the precision in the cut of the stone is to consider how well it reflects light on a consistent basis throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. Gem color appears washed out.

Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.

Next comes weight and size. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.

There are many other common types of treatment to enhance the beauty of colored gemstones. Emeralds are often oiled and waxed to protect them and to hide fine lines that naturally occur in the stone. Some sapphires have their blue color enhanced using diffusion, a chemical process. Certain stones are treated with radiation, again mimicking the processes of nature. All these practices are standard in the jewelry industry; in fact, enhancement is so common that good quality unenhanced stones often come with a certificate stating that fact.
