So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You'll know exactly what to buy.

The first item to consider should be the color of the gemstone. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

Gemstone cut is the next factor to consider before a purchase is made. The preciseness of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

The clarity in a stone is our next factor. Clarity refers to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye requires a 10X gemstone clarity magnifier or gem microscope. Serious hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference of relative density or specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in New Jersey you can find Smoky Quartz, Agate, Pearl and Prehnite. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.

Topaz can be found in streams, rivers and in gravel deposits. It is found mainly
in gem pegmatites where the presence of fluorine can be found. Flourine provides
a rich environment for the stones to grow into very large crystals. In fact,
without the presence of Flourine topaz would not exist. Topaz crystallizes
orthorhombically and develops columns with square and diamond shapes planes with
multisurfaced heads. Topaz can also be found in cracks and cavities where a
combination of Flourine and silica and alumina which was released by very hot
temperatures caused the gems to form. Chromium Oxide is what provides its
beautiful color.

Other than the oil on emeralds, which can last for years before needing replacement, any quality enhancement is permanent and should not require special care. With emeralds, you should simply be careful not to clean the stone too vigorously or you might remove the layer of wax or oil, changing the appearance of the stone. If this happens, bring it to your jeweler to have the layer reapplied. Bringing your emerald in for a cleaning and re-oiling on a regular basis will help keep it looking its best.

Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? Well for one thing gemstones are extremely beautiful. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

The first item to consider should be the color of the stone. You'll want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. This means red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are less per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the natural color of the gemstone, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent method to determine the precision in gemstone cut is to consider how well it reflects light on a consistent basis over the stones complete surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting internally. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Gemstone clarity is our next factor. Clarity refers to a stones relative freedom from inclusions or blemishes. A perfect gemstone is definitely worth much more. To see flaws beyond with the eye can see you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Many hobbyists will get a 10X jewelers were gemstone loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Just in the United States in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.

Hints On natural fancy color diamonds

Agate is a type of Chalcedony. It is an uncommon stone. Agate is a great ston
to buy if you want "something different". There are several types of agate.
Common ones are: blue lace agate, fire agate, moss agate, tree agate and
petrified wood. One will often see these in agate cabochons or agate beads. I've
seen agate pendants, necklaces and bolo ties that look stunning.

It is when you get into gems of a carat of more that they get really expensive.
Good quality rubies in this size range are few and far between. The law of
supply and demand is really obvious here. While many people would like a full
carat ruby, few have the thousands of dollars needed to purchase one.

How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They collect and evaluate loose gemstones or loose diamonds. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to various areas nearby to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this hobby interest you then follow along as we show you the in and outs of gemstone collecting.

First off you'll need the knowledge on each of the gemstones out there. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

The chief thing you need to take into account is the color of the gemstone. You want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in determining gemstone value. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A stone that has a poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will never be consistent.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This means the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, spots, or particles within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next comes weight and size. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized ruby or sapphire weighs 1.20 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Garnet, Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Zircon for instance. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Just in the United States in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire.

Tips About loose black diamonds

Aquamarine comes in various shades of blue: light, blue-green and dark. The best
quality is see-through. This gemstone has a hardness of 7.5. Clean your
aquamarine jewelry with a soft bristle brush in warm, soapy water. Avoid using a
home ultrasonic machine. Especially with an aquamarine engagement ring, care
should be taken to protect this gem stone from scratches and sharp blows.

show very little brilliance or scintillation. Expect to see "nail heads", where
the diamond is black in the center and "fish eyes" where the brilliance washes
out in the middle.

Brilliance is the amount of light reflected from the crown facets of a facet-cut gemstone. It is a combination of the light reflected back out of the stone and the light reflected directly from the facet surfaces. Two factors critical in achieving maximum brilliance are the angle of the pavilion facets and the degree of polish on the facet surface (lustre). The table facet of a diamonds is cut to various sizes depending on the desire for more brilliance and less fire(dispersion), where a larger table is used. Or more fire and less brillinace, where a smaller table is used. A good balance is obtained by cutting to ideal proportions. The pavilion facet angles are not only critical in determining the amount of brilliance, shallow angles may result in creating a 'window' in the stone; an area of the stone that can be seen through. Deep angles result in dark areas in the stone, termed extinction. Brilliance is lost in both situations.
