Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to know everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you understand about the hobby of gemstones the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what to look for.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the farther they are from the pure natural color.

Gemstone cut is easily one of the most important aspects when you consider a gemstone's value. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut will not reflect the light consistently. Color tone, saturation, and hue will be inconsistent.

The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A gemstones that is normally found to be clean is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Serious hobbyists will employ an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing stamps, coins, beads as well as gems.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or hunt the quartz regions in Yellowdine Lake in Western Australia.
