Collecting Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Many people today say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know in starting in this hobby.
The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find everything you need to know that will make you an informed buyer.
First, color is a major part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that are paler or darker than the pure color tend to be less valued.
The way a stone is cut is the second most important value determination to consider before buying. The precision of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.
Gemstone clarity is an important consideration. When we talk of clarity it relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will buy a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.
Another consideration is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Lapis lazuli, Citrine or Variscite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite.
