Why I Like Gemstones
Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose gemstones or loose diamonds. Some people even begin to visit various local locations to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby follow along as we reveal the in and outs of gemstone collecting.
The very first step in becoming a gemstone collector the smart way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a look in your local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.
The chief thing you need to take into account should be stone color. You want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectral colors. We are talking about red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.
Gemstone cut is an important aspect to consider when buying a gemstone. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light in a consistent way. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always look inconsistent.
Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Normally large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Next comes weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are valued by the unit called the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is such a variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Emerald, Citrine or Zircon for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone.

More Information On loose gemstone
Two Afrikaner brothers owned a farm where the Orange and Vaal rivers join.
Johannes Nicholas de Beer and Diederik Arnoldus de Beer had diamonds discovered
on their property. They were in no position to protect the property from diamond
hunters and predators so they sold it for 6300 pounds to investors Cecil Rhodes
and Charles Rudd. Two mines were actually found on the property located in the
Kimberly region. One mine was named after the original owners of the property,
and the other one was named after the area. The De Beers and Kimberly mines were
consequently born. Rhodes and Rudd merged the two enterprises to form De Beers
Consolidated Mines Limited. It couldn't have happened at a better time.

Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished diamond.
More than any other feature, proportions determine a diamond's optical
properties. Studies have shown that table size, crown angle, and pavilion depth
have a dramatic effect on a diamond's appearance. Symmetry is a grading term for
the exactness of shape and placement of facets. Variations in symmetry include
off-center culets and tables, poor facet alignment, misshapen facets, out-of-
round girdles, and wavy girdles.
